How the gap moves through the year

Paris is 8 hours behind Sydney for about 6 months of the year.

Paris is 10 hours behind Sydney for about 5 months of the year.

Paris is 9 hours behind Sydney for about 4 weeks of the year.

The short odd stretches come from the two cities changing their clocks on different weekends.

From the last Sunday in March (when Paris moves forward), Paris is 9 hours behind Sydney.

From the first Sunday in April (when Sydney falls back), Paris is 8 hours behind Sydney.

From the first Sunday in October (when Sydney moves forward), Paris is 9 hours behind Sydney.

From the last Sunday in October (when Paris falls back), Paris is 10 hours behind Sydney.

Sydney moves its clocks forward one hour on the first Sunday in October at 2:00 am local time and back on the first Sunday in April at 3:00 am, switching between Australian Eastern Standard Time (UTC+10) and Australian Eastern Daylight Time (UTC+11).

Paris moves its clocks forward one hour on the last Sunday in March at 2:00 am local time and back on the last Sunday in October at 3:00 am, switching between Central European Standard Time (UTC+1) and Central European Summer Time (UTC+2).

Next clock change for this pair, as of when this page was built (2026-10-20): Paris falls back on Sun 25 October 2026.

Everything on this page also holds if you swap Sydney for Melbourne, Canberra or Hobart, or Paris for Berlin, Madrid, Rome, Hamburg or Budapest — those cities follow exactly the same clock all year.

Working hours that overlap

In January, two 9-to-5 days never meet — not a single quarter-hour is inside working hours in both cities.

July is no different.

Even with both days stretched to 8:00–18:00 there is no shared hour, so one side always joins outside the office day. Rotating who takes the early or late slot is the usual fix.

Across the week

At 9:00 on a Monday morning in Sydney, it is 11:00 pm on Sunday in Paris — still the weekend there.

1 hour of a Sydney working week (Monday to Friday, 9 to 5) fall on the weekend in Paris, so part of Monday or Friday is lost for meetings.

The other way round, 3 hours of a Paris working week fall on the Sydney weekend.

Daylight, distance and night calls

Sydney and Paris are about 16,960 km (10,540 miles) apart and 149° of longitude apart, which by the sun alone would be 10 hours.

Sydney's winter clock runs 55 minutes ahead of the sun, and Paris's runs 51 minutes ahead of the sun.

In mid-January the sun is up in Sydney from about 5:59 am to 8:09 pm, and the sun is up in Paris from about 8:39 am to 5:20 pm; both cities are in daylight at the same time for about 1 hour 30 minutes.

In mid-July the sun is up in Sydney from about 6:58 am to 5:04 pm, and the sun is up in Paris from about 6:03 am to 9:50 pm; both cities are in daylight at the same time for about 3 hours.

In January, 7 hours of a Sydney office day fall in Paris's night (10 pm to 6 am), and 5 hours of a Paris office day fall in Sydney's night.

In July, 5 hours of a Sydney office day fall in Paris's night (10 pm to 6 am), and 3 hours of a Paris office day fall in Sydney's night.

Two usual compromises in January: an early call at 7:00 am in Sydney is 9:00 pm the previous day in Paris; a late call at 6:00 pm in Sydney is 8:00 am there.

Common mistakes with Sydney and Paris

  • Assuming the gap is fixed. Both cities change their clocks, but not on the same weekend, so a recurring meeting can land an hour off for a few weeks.
  • Getting the date wrong. With a gap this large, an afternoon call in one city is the next morning — or the previous evening — in the other. Write the date for both cities in the invite.
  • Writing “GMT+11” all year for Sydney. In summer the zone is Australian Eastern Standard Time; calendar apps handle it, but a typed time in an email can be read the wrong way.
