How the gap moves through the year

Vancouver is 17 hours behind Sydney for about 6 months of the year.

Vancouver is 18 hours behind Sydney for about 4 months of the year.

Vancouver is 19 hours behind Sydney for about 2 months of the year.

The short odd stretches come from the two cities changing their clocks on different weekends.

From the first Sunday in April (when Sydney falls back), Vancouver is 17 hours behind Sydney.

From the first Sunday in October (when Sydney moves forward), Vancouver is 18 hours behind Sydney.

Sydney moves its clocks forward one hour on the first Sunday in October at 2:00 am local time and back on the first Sunday in April at 3:00 am, switching between Australian Eastern Standard Time (UTC+10) and Australian Eastern Daylight Time (UTC+11).

Vancouver changes its clocks on dates that do not follow a fixed weekday rule (Pacific Standard Time / Pacific Daylight Time); check the date before you book.

Next clock change for this pair, as of when this page was built (2026-10-20): Sydney falls back on Sun 4 April 2027.

Everything on this page also holds if you swap Sydney for Melbourne, Canberra or Hobart — those cities follow exactly the same clock all year.

Working hours that overlap

In January, a 9-to-5 day in both cities shares 3 hours: 9:00 am–12:00 pm in Sydney, which is 2:00 pm–5:00 pm in Vancouver.

In July, a 9-to-5 day in both cities shares 1 hour: 9:00 am–10:00 am in Sydney, which is 4:00 pm–5:00 pm in Vancouver.

Across the week

At 9:00 on a Monday morning in Sydney, it is 2:00 pm on Sunday in Vancouver — still the weekend there.

8 hours of a Sydney working week (Monday to Friday, 9 to 5) fall on the weekend in Vancouver, so part of Monday or Friday is lost for meetings.

Daylight, distance and night calls

Sydney and Vancouver are about 12,500 km (7,770 miles) apart and 86° of longitude apart, which by the sun alone would be 5 hours 45 minutes.

Sydney's winter clock runs 55 minutes ahead of the sun, and Vancouver's runs 12 minutes ahead of the sun.

In mid-January the sun is up in Sydney from about 5:59 am to 8:09 pm, and the sun is up in Vancouver from about 8:02 am to 4:40 pm; both cities are in daylight at the same time for about 5 hours 45 minutes.

In mid-July the sun is up in Sydney from about 6:58 am to 5:04 pm, and the sun is up in Vancouver from about 5:23 am to 9:14 pm; both cities are in daylight at the same time for about 7 hours 15 minutes.

In January, none of a Sydney office day falls in Vancouver's night, and 2 hours of a Vancouver office day fall in Sydney's night.

In July, 2 hours of a Sydney office day fall in Vancouver's night (10 pm to 6 am), and 4 hours of a Vancouver office day fall in Sydney's night.

Common mistakes with Sydney and Vancouver

  • Assuming the gap is fixed. Both cities change their clocks, but not on the same weekend, so a recurring meeting can land an hour off for a few weeks.
  • Getting the date wrong. With a gap this large, an afternoon call in one city is the next morning — or the previous evening — in the other. Write the date for both cities in the invite.
  • Writing “GMT+11” all year for Sydney. In summer the zone is Australian Eastern Standard Time; calendar apps handle it, but a typed time in an email can be read the wrong way.
