About these lists. Words come from ENABLE, a public-domain word list; a few slurs and explicit words are left out. Letter values are this site's own rule, based on how rare each letter is. How the clue helper works

Type the five-letter word you played and press Add. Each tile starts grey; tap it once for yellow (the letter is in the answer but somewhere else) and again for green (right letter, right place). The helper keeps only the words that would have given you exactly those colours for every row — the same test a guessing game uses, including the rule for repeated letters, where a letter is only marked yellow as many times as it appears in the answer.

The suggested next guess is the word that splits the remaining words into the most even groups by colour pattern, measured in bits: one bit halves the list, three bits cut it to an eighth. It may be a word you would never play as an answer — that is deliberate when it rules out more.

Why the list is longer than you expect

Daily word games pick their answers from a short list of common words that they keep to themselves. This helper does not use that list. It checks every five-letter word in ENABLE, a public-domain word list, so unusual words such as AAHED or ZOWIE stay in the running until your colours rule them out. The box lists them in alphabetical order because the word list carries no information about which words are common.

Your board, saved for today

The board is saved in your browser under today's date as you change it, so if you close the tab and come back later the same day your rows are still there. The last seven days are listed under the box with the number of rows each took. Nothing leaves your device unless you press Copy link, which puts the rows and colours in an address you can send to someone.

Not affiliated

Wordle is a trademark of The New York Times Company. This is an independent helper for any five-letter colour-clue game and is not connected with or endorsed by the game's owner. See the sources page for the word list and its limits.

How repeated letters are handled

Repeated letters are where most hand-made filters go wrong. Imagine the answer is ABBEY and you guess BOBBY. The answer has two Bs, so only two of your three Bs can be coloured. The first B is yellow, the O is grey, the second B is green, the last B is grey because both Bs in the answer are already accounted for, and the Y is green. A grey tile for a letter you have already seen coloured elsewhere means something specific: there are no more copies than the coloured ones. The helper applies this rule row by row, so a grey B after coloured Bs limits the answer to exactly that many Bs rather than banning the letter entirely.

Reading the number of words left

The count above the list is the number of five-letter words that agree with every row you entered. A large number after the first guess is normal, because one row of colours rarely removes more than a few thousand candidates. What matters more is how fast the number falls. A guess that leaves hundreds of words has done less than one that leaves dozens, even if both found a green tile. When the count is down to a handful, the order matters less than recognising which of them is a real everyday word.

When to ignore the suggested guess

The suggestion maximises information, not the chance of being right. On the last guess it is usually better to choose a real candidate from the list yourself. If you play in a mode that forces every revealed hint into your next guess, the suggestion may not be legal for you; pick the best word from the list that respects your own rules. The helper does not know which mode you use.

What this helper does not do

It does not look up today's answer, does not connect to any game account, and does not know which words a game actually uses as answers. It only reasons about the clues you give it. If you enter a colour wrong, the list will be wrong, so the first thing to check when the list looks empty is whether a tile was tapped too many times.

Questions people ask

Why are there words in the list that I have never seen?

Because the list is a general word list, not the short list of answers a game uses. Scan for the ones you recognise; the odd ones will rarely be the answer.

Can I use it for other languages?

No. The list is English only.

What if I made a mistake on a row?

Remove the row or retype it with the correct colours. The list recalculates from all remaining rows, so nothing is permanently lost by a wrong tap.

Is it cheating?

That is a matter for you and the people you play with. Some players use a helper only after finishing, to see how they could have done better; others use it to learn which starting words split the list well.
