About Flag finder

What this is

A finder for national flags. Tick the colours a flag contains and the symbols on it, and the grid narrows to the flags that have all of them — 196 states in total.

How colours and symbols are decided

Colours are measured from each flag image: a colour counts when it covers at least 0.6% of the flag, with edges excluded so that blended pixels between two colours are not counted. A small emblem can therefore add a colour. Stripes are detected the same way, from rows or columns that are one colour. Symbols — star, crescent, sun, cross, animal and the rest — were labelled by hand, so a flag with a detailed coat of arms can appear under several.

Which flags are included

The 193 United Nations member states, the Holy See and Palestine (UN observers) and Kosovo. Territories are left out because most share their parent's flag. Names follow the source lists and do not imply any judgment on the legal status of any territory.

What it leaves out

Historical and regional flags, flag proportions and exact shades, and the meaning of each flag. The colours page only counts how often colours appear.

How the flags are labelled. Images are from the open-source flag-icons set (MIT). Colours are measured from each image; symbols are labelled by hand. Names follow the source lists and do not imply any judgment on the status of any territory. Sources and limits.

Corrections

If a flag is labelled wrongly or a colour looks off, say which flag and what is wrong.
